A mid-size show runs about eleven minutes and costs between forty and ninety thousand, depending almost entirely on venue and how late you lock the run-of-show.

The four overruns

Venue overtime, last-minute casting replacements, sound re-cuts after the final rehearsal, and steaming labour on show day. Between them they account for most of the variance we see across seasons.

Build a contingency of fifteen per cent and hold it against those four lines specifically. A general contingency gets spent on the first thing that goes wrong, which is usually the least important.
